Dr. Laleh Seyyed-Kalantari is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at York University's Lassonde School of Engineering and a Faculty Affiliate at the Vector Institute for Artificial Intelligence. Her research focuses on responsible AI, generative AI, and fairness in AI models, particularly within healthcare applications. She has conducted significant studies on bias in AI-driven medical imaging, highlighting issues like underdiagnosis in underserved populations and the unintended detection of patient race by AI systems

Dr. Seyyed-Kalantari earned her Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from McMaster University in 2017. She completed postdoctoral research at the University of Toronto and the Vector Institute as an NSERC fellow from 2019 to 2022. Her work has been recognized with several awards, including the Google Research Scholar Program award (2024), NSERC Postdoctoral Fellowship (2018), and a nomination for the NSERC and L’Oréal-UNESCO Women in Science award (2018).

Beyond academia, she contributes to policy initiatives aimed at promoting equitable AI practices and is involved with programs like the AI Insights for Policymakers, initiated by CIFAR and Mila. Her research has been featured in various media outlets, emphasizing the importance of fairness and transparency in AI systems
